It wasn't The War of Northern Aggression. It was The War of Southern Treason. The big problem is we let the traitors off entirely too easily. Every senior officer of the traitor army, every politician of the traitor state, should have been hanged, drawn and quartered. Publicly.
Tried, and then hanged. They should've done to the Rebs what the Allies did to the Eichmanns of the world. Set up tribunals. Try them and convict them. It should've been made part of the surrender, and a condition for any state seeking readmission to the Unionβ in addition to the amendments.
Agreed.Brutal clarity in this post . Every 'lean across the aisle' person should read it.The Republican's 'Southern Strategy' started in the 1970s as a way to co-opt southern conservatives to the party to found a Republican majority. The belief was the southerners would be a supporting chorus. They ended up taking over the whole show. The Republican party is now primarily a southern party. It's a key part of why we have Trump.
We used to be able to 'lean across' quite successfully. Things were repairing and then it stopped. It reversed. I continue to point to the Reagan years and policies. It's obviously no longer possible to work with the Republican party since they were weakened first by the Tea Party, now taken over by Maga.
Great point. Trump isn't allowing any choice, by ripping up history and deleting science from our lives. On what I think is a more positive note, Germany after WWII also didn't give citizens a choice on whether to embrace Nazi's or not. If we can get out of this mess, I'm not interesting in hearing word one from Miller or Bannon or Trump or anything they think or said except by cautionary tale.
If you have the time for your podcast, please interview Dr. Sarah Churchwell of the University of London. She is an American scholar (from the Midwest?) teaching abroad. Relative to your note on the βLost Causeβ, her 2022 work, βThe Wrath to Come, Gone With The Wind and Lies America Tellsβ is a masterful explanation of the nationβs inability to manage the tragic import of its origin sin. As an example, here is one interview of note: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gcp1OnwIE64 .
Also, Iβm on my third reading of βHit βEm Where It Hurtsβ [Edit 8-23-25, typo]. Hopefully, one day, Iβll get an autograph (smile). Thank you for your work.
Exactly !! Thank you Rachel. It is about time we all started to make our voices Very loud on this subject. If we are lucky enough to save our democracy we better address this issue in a meaningful way. I think following your advice will be a fantastic jumping off point. You are a national treasure.

Fabulous, and written with entirely appropriate rage and passion! Good for you, and thanks from us!
This makes me wonder if we will ever Choose to agree on the same reality?
If ignorance is bliss many people are Euphoric!
Thanks Rachel!
